According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas prices have fluctuated over the past 20 years. Gas prices typically vary by season, with lower prices in winter months and higher prices in summer months, when demand is greater.
The lowest average price per gallon for regular gasoline in Florida in the past 20 years was $1.72 in December 2008. The highest price was $4.723 in June 2022.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, demand dropped, as did gas prices.
Post-pandemic, gas prices rose as demand rose, and the supply chain was not ready to meet that demand. Several refineries had closed during the pandemic, leaving the industry structurally short of capacity.
An additional factor post-pandemic was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which impacted the world's oil supply.
