AAA: Florida gas prices rise 20 cents ahead of Thanksgiving

Posted

TAMPA — Florida gas prices rose 20 cents per gallon last week, as millions of Americans prepare to travel for Thanksgiving.

AAA released its annual Thanksgiving Travel Forecast last week. Of the record-setting 81.8 million Americans forecast to travel 50 miles or more, 90% (73 million) will drive. In Florida, more than 4.25 million residents are expected to venture out. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are forecast to be the busiest times on the road.

“Florida gas prices jumped 20 cents last week, following a familiar trend of rising after a series of declines,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “If that pattern holds, drivers could see prices ease as they hit the road for Thanksgiving. With pump prices matching last year’s holiday, even a small drop would give travelers extra savings compared to 2024.”

On Sunday, Nov. 23, Florida gas prices averaged $3.10 per gallon, which is:
18 cents more than last week
15 cents more than last month
2 cents more than last year
The same price as Thanksgiving Day 2024
AAA expects to be very busy helping stranded motorists during the holiday period. Last Thanksgiving, AAA received more than 600,000 calls from drivers with dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts. “Our roadside technicians will spend their holiday helping others, and we ask drivers to give them the space they need to work safely,” Jenkins continued. “When you see flashing lights—whether from an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or disabled car—please slow down and move over, so our team can return home safely to their families.”

Ways to Save on Gasoline

  1. Combine errands to limit driving time.
  2. Drive conservatively. Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding, which reduces fuel economy.
  3. Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  4. Shop around for the best gas prices in your community by using the AAA mobile app.
  5. Pay with cash. Some retailers charge more per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
