Florida lawmakers convened in Tallahassee this week for another round of interim committee meetings, preparing for the 2026 regular session that begins in January. These meetings provide an early look at the policy issues and funding priorities likely to shape the months ahead.
Below are some of the key topics and actions from this week’s hearings:
• The Senate Community Affairs Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 48, which would require local governments to allow accessory dwelling units in any areas zoned for single-family residential use. The bill must be approved by two more committees before it can reach the Senate floor for a vote.
• The Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee heard presentations from state administrators for Florida’s primary land conservation programs. Administrators are seeking $100 million for Florida Forever and $350 million for the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program in the 2026 legislative session.
• In addition to SB 48, other growth management related bills have been filed. We’re also tracking this year’s FDACS omnibus bill (SB 290), which deals with surplus lands and biosolids management -- two topics 1000 Friends of Florida monitors closely.
