Lake Okeechobee represents the ecological heart of Florida, yet decades of nutrient runoff have left a legacy of high phosphorus levels that fuel toxic blue-green algal blooms. These conditions threaten public health, hinder local economies, and damage the delicate ecosystems of the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries. Addressing this historical pollution is an essential step in safeguarding Florida’s water resources and ensuring a resilient environment for future generations.
