OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee City Council recognized police officer Skip Eddings for his 20 years of service at their Sept. 25 meeting.
Before accepting his Longevity Service Certificate, Eddings addressed the large group of family and friends that came to City Hall to show their support.
“As you all know, a few weeks ago I lost my dad,” said Eddings.”He was one of my biggest supporters. He could party with the best of them, but he always respected what I did. I appreciated that.”
Skip started on the police auxiliary in 1988, before signing on as a police officer with the city in 2003. In 2012 Eddings was promoted to sergeant. And in 2019 he became a school resource officer at Central Elementary.
“Shift work and his sleep schedule wasn’t jiving,” said chief of police Donald Hagan. “We heard it every time he was on midnights. He wanted something different. So he took the job at Central. And he’s been excellent there. There’s nobody more perfect for that job than him.”
Eddings founded the honor guard in Okeechobee, is a firearms instructer and works on active shooter training in the schools.
“It’s the best career move I ever made,” Eddings said of his move to school resource officer. “I enjoy going to work everyday.”
