OKEECHOBEE – At the Sept. 11 meeting of the Okeechobee County Commission, Letta A. Jordan and Lonnie Kirsch, on behalf of Okeechobee Chapter of The National Society Daughters of The American Revolution requested the board issue a proclamation designating Sept. 17 through 23, 2025 as U.S. Constitution Week in Okeechobee County, Florida.
Constitution Week is the commemoration of America's most important document.
Commissioners approved a proclamation stating: “United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties, freedoms and rights.
“This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and in 1955, they petitioned Congress to set aside September 17 through 23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
“September 17, 2025, marks the two hundred and thirty-seventh anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention; and it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary.
“Public Law 915 guarantees the issuing of a proclamation each year by the President of the United States of America designating Sept. 17 through 23 as Constitution Week.
“The observance of US Constitution Week provides an opportunity for all Americans to reflect upon the significance of our Constitution and its role in shaping our nation's history, guiding its future, and honoring the contributions of the framers of the Constitution as we reaffirm our commitment to upholding its principles and values.”
