OKEECHOBEE  -- A video that appears to show a teacher securing a student to his chair by using zip ties surfaced on social media on Dec. 10.

Okeechobee County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Dylan Tedders released the following statement on Friday night: "On Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, a video was posted on social media depicting an incident in an Okeechobee High School classroom involving a student being zip tied to a seat by a staff member.

"The incident had been reported to the school and the staff member was reassigned prior to the video surfacing on Facebook.

"District staff notified the Department of Children and Families, Okeechobee County Sheriff Department, and Professional Practices through the Department of Education.

"The district is currently conducting an investigation of the incident.

"The staff member has been reassigned to another position pending the results of the investigation.

"The mental health and behavioral supports department has reached out to the family to provide support."

While the school district did not release the name of the teacher or the students, posters on social media who viewed the view claimed the teacher had joked that if students fell asleep in class, he would zip tie them to their desks.
