With Laura Mendicino joining the CCPS administrative office to share her professional learning skills with the masses, Highlands Elementary School (HLE) has a new leader at the helm—Margaux Horne! Horne is no stranger to Immokalee as she served as assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Lake Trafford Elementary School. In addition to being at Lake Trafford, Horne’s 21-year experience includes ESE teacher, classroom teacher, math coach, and assistant principal of curriculum and instruction at Estates Elementary School.
“I am so happy and proud to be the principal at Highlands Elementary. I am looking forward to working with students, teachers, and our community to continue to help Highlands thrive!”
Working on its third “A” grade in a row, the school’s theme this year is Lights, Camera, Lead! Leadership is something HLE has demonstrated and grown the past few years. Leadership Binders will be used in the classroom, helping students take ownership of their data and their achievements.
But to lead, you have to show up, which is why attendance will be a focus. “Our new Connection Coaches will help students who struggle to attend school connect with an adult advocate and set good habits for attendance now, so it will continue throughout their school career,” shares Horne. She’s even challenged her staff to increase their personal attendance as well.
Horne is also hoping to boost participation in the school’s Parent Lighthouse team. Any parent interested in learning more should contact the school at 239-377-7100.
And parents won’t want to miss the school’s Curriculum Night, scheduled for September 17 from 5-7pm. There, parents will be able to learn more about what’s ahead and how they can help their child achieve success in school.
“Leadership is in all of us!” exclaims Horne. “I’m proud to be a Highlands Hawk!”
