CLEWISTON - Kristine Petersen is new mayor of Clewiston.

Petersen is a Criminal Justice and Journalism teacher at Clewiston High School. She also serves as the advisor for CHS Florida Public Safety Association. She is known for being a dedicated community volunteer and city commissioner. She has two children, three grandchildren, and it is no secret that she loves her dogs.

Petersen was selected by the city commission to fill a vacant seat in February, 2014.  Then, in November 2014, she ran for office and was elected to a four year term. In December 2014,  Petersen was selected as vice mayor of the Commission. She was re-elected to a four-year term in November of 2018, and appointed Mayor in December of 2020.  Her current term expires in November of 2022.

As stated on the city’s website, “Each general election year, the City Commission holds an organizational meeting and from their number appoints by majority vote, the mayor and vice mayor. The mayor is recognized as the head of government for all ceremonial purposes. The vice mayor shall serve in the absence of the mayor.”

The current members of the City of Clewiston City Commission are Kristine Petersen, mayor; Greg Thompson, vice mayor; Mali Gardner, commissioner; Melanie McGahee, commissioner; and James Pittman, commissioner.

Regular Commission meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, at 5 p.m. in the City Hall commission chambers, located at 115 West Ventura Avenue. Special meetings may be held at the call of the Mayor or by a majority of the Commission.
