Students at Immokalee High School (IHS) recently received a special visit from Native Pride Arts, a Native American dance group that travels the United States performing at schools and other venues. Larry Yazzie, founder and artistic director for Native Pride Arts, shared the story of himself and his tribe with the IHS students. According to Assistant Principal Maryann Gallegos, “The students enjoyed the dance moves that went with the music. They commented that he looked like he was in a trance.” Larry is a two-time World Champion Fancy Dancer from the Meskwaki Nation in Tama, Iowa. He founded Native Pride Arts to give back to his community and to the world. Their mission is to educate, inspire, motivate, and empower diverse communities to bridge cultural gaps through Indigenous traditions. “By sharing life stories through music, dance, and storytelling, we nurture meaningful communication among all people,” states Larry on his website. Larry shared that he wants to be a positive person in young people’s lives. He had plans to visit Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School the following day.
