OKEECHOBEE- Malissa Morgan was elected Okeechobee County School Board chair during the board’s Nov. 14 meeting.
Board member Jill Holcomb was elected as the board’s vice chair for the upcoming year.
The Okeechobee County School Board also recognized Okeechobee High School for celebrating it’s 100th year of accreditation this year.
OHS first became an accredited institution back in 1923.
“It’s special being able to celebrate our 100 years on the same year that we are breaking ground on a new high school,” said OHS principal Lauren Myers. “Our community is unique in that we have only one high school. So every single employee and every single student can celebrate this.”
Principal Myers was also selected by Florida Taxwatch as one of their Principal Leadership Award winners this year. The Principal Leadership Award program was established by Florida TaxWatch to identify principals around the state who have had the greatest impact on their students, in parts of the state where educational success can transform a community.
Myers will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Winter Park next year and will receive a $1,000 cash prize and will also have the opportunity to award a two-year prepaid scholarship to a local sutdent.
