We have made our annual migration south to Okeechobee this winter. We have loved this area for many reasons: the lake, Taylor Creek, the many, many critters and beautiful birds present, of course, the weather, the fact that it is not quite as choked with traffic as the coastal areas, and its large population of cute and curious cows, LOL. We truly miss The Cowtown Cafe, which was half the reason we came here when it was open--fabulous people and food.
But the disappointment in that loss is only overshadowed by the disappointment in the level of litter that you see everywhere. Drive from 441 to 70, for instance, and there is not a place you can look along the road that isn't littered. And 70 out to St. Lucie County is nearly as bad. When you hit St. Lucie county, the level is dramatically reduced to nearly nothing.
I pick items off our shore on Taylor Creek several times per week. Plastic bottles, and bags, and if you take the 'short cut' over to Home Depot, that road is just loaded. I saw a cow eating a large sheet of plastic in that pasture last week. I have a photo of it
This city could be so beautiful, even if it isn't 'coastal style,' by simply cleaning up the litter.
Is there ANYTHING a citizen can do to awaken locals, or to get it cleaned up?
