BELLE GLADE- The Glades Day Lady Gators varsity volleyball team secured a district championship with their win over the Williston Lady Red Devils on Oct. 20.
The Lady Gators won 3-0, winning the first and second sets by a score of 25-17, and the third set 25-22.
Senior Peyton Pelham and sophomore Brielle George led Glades Day with 16 kills each against Williston. Junior Olivia Sanford had 14 kills. Senior Addison Ascheman had a team leading 22 assists in the district championship while senior Hana Lohmann had 27 digs.
The championship victory came after the Lady Gators put together a 12-10 regular season that saw them shutout Clewiston twice and split their series with LaBelle. The program has been rebuilding after finishing 3-9 in 2020. Last season, the Lady Gators improved to a 15-10 record before being knocked out in the district semifinal. This year, they bring back the championship trophy to Glades Day.
Pelham has been a standout on offense for Glades Day, leading the team with 357 kills. That puts her as the third highest scorer in Glades Day’s 1A region. Sanford isn’t far behind, ranked eleventh in kills in the region.
Brielle George’s 84 blocks this season is enough to make her the top in the district in that category.
The district championship win propelled the Lady Gators to the regional tournament where they faced Dixie County in the regional semifinal. Glades Day won that game 3-0, taking the first set 25-18, second set 25-15, and third set 25-20.
In the regional, the Lady Gators faced a familiar foe, the same Williston team they defeated in the district championship. But this time, Williston came away with the victory in a match that went to five sets, winning 3-2.
