MOORE HAVEN – At their Sept. 25 meeting, Glades County Commissioners approved an amendment to county ordinance to allow 4-H and FFA members to keep domestic animals in residential areas without obtaining a special exception. Other changes in the ordinance in relation to animals in residential areas will be considered at a future meeting.
The Glades County Planning and Zoning Board suggested the section about animals raised by 4-H and FFA members be decided before the children get their animals for this school year.
The commission opted to exempt FFA and 4-H members from the requirement to obtain a special exception to have a farm animal in residential zoning. The 4-H and FFA members must register the project animals with the Glades County Extension Agent, who will provide a list of the project animals and addresses to the Community Development Director.
If the property owner wishes to keep the animals on the property after the child is no longer a 4-H or FFA member, the property owner must apply for a special exception.
