OKEECHOBEE- The Clewiston High School Tigers and Okeechobee High School Brahmans junior varsity football teams faced off at OHS on Aug. 24 to kick off their season.
The Tigers won 12-8 in dramatic fashion after making a goal line stand against the Brahman offense in the final seconds of the fourth quarter.
The game started slowly, for both teams. The Tiger offense was stalled out for much of the first half due to issues with the snap. But irocially, Clewiston would score the first points of the game on a botched snap by Okeechobee. A snap on a punt attempt by the Brahmans sailed over the punter’s head and rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
After halftime, both offenses started clicking. The Tigers scored a touchdown to go up 9-0. Then, the Brahmans responded with a long scoring drive of their own. Okeechobee went for two after the touchdown and converted it to make it 9-8.
Clewiston added a field goal late in the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 12-8. But the Brahmans got the ball back with a little over a minute remaining in the game and drove all the way to the Clewiston goal line.
The Tiger defense stood strong, though, and denied the Brahmans from scoring a last second touchdown and secured the win.
The Brahman JV team is home again on Sept. 7 when they host Port St Lucie. The Tigers JV team will be on the road to play Sebring on Aug. 31.
