OKEECHOBEE- The Immokalee Indians earned a 42-22 victory over the Okeechobee Brahmans on Oct. 6.

The Indians got on the board first, with Immokalee junior Jayden Mixon scoring a touchdown after the Indian defense forced a turnover. They followed that up with another touchdown in the second quarter and headed into halftime up 13-0 on the Brahmans.

The Immokalee defensive line wreaked havoc on the Okeechobee offense for the entire first half. Despite that adversity, the offense put together a few plays near the end of the second quarter and threatened to score.  Brahman senior Corey Wilkerson nearly caught a touchdown pass from senior Ni’marion Bryant in the corner of the endzone, but Immokalee cornerback Loudarius Gachette managed to knock the ball out at the last second.

The Okeechobee offense bounced back in the third quarter, however, with Bryant breaking free for a 80-yard touchdown run that made it 13-8 after the Brahmans secured the two-point conversion. But a recurring theme throughout the second half was for every punch Okeechobee was able to land, the Indians were able to counter. Immokalee answered with a touchdown of their own, to go up 21-8 after Bryant’s long touchdown run.

Bryant followed up that run with an 82-yard touchdown catch from senior Chris Requeina to put Okeechobee back within one score, 21-14. The Indians once again responded with another touchdown to keep pace with the Brahmans. OHS sophomore John White scored a touchdown on a 40-yard screen pass. Requeina ran it in for the two-point conversion to make it 28-22.

Ultimately, Immokalee’s ability to answer every time Okeechobee created some momentum was the key to the game.

Bryant finished the game with 174 yards passing and 174 yards rushing. Sophomores Fred Hill and Matthew May each had nine tackles for the Brahmans.
