OKEECHOBEE – Quarters for a Cause events will be held at the C. Scott Driver Recreation Facility on State Road 78 on June 17 and July 15.
At the May 22 meeting of the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners, Leah Suarez of Our Village Okeechobee, asked the commissioners to waive the fee for the use of the facility for two Quarters for a Cause events.
“We strongly support Quarters for a Cause, which is a fund-raising opportunity for people with serious challenges. These events often raise money for people with cancer and other medical conditions,” explained Leah Suarez of Our Village Okeechobee.
Quarters for a Cause events have been held monthly for many years at the American Legion.
“Due to some scheduling issues with the site that had been hosting, we have to move it for summer,” Suarez said.
Quarters for a Cause events include 50/50 drawings, Chinese raffles for donated items and items for sale by vendors.
Most Quarters for a Cause events help local residents with medical issues, such as the January event raised funds for 12-year-old Ely Pabon, who was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which has required three surgeries.
Quarters for a Cause can also help with other needs in the community. The February Quarters for a Cause event benefited the Okeechobee High School Brahman Band. The November 2024 Quarters for a Cause helped raise funds for Brady Young’s Eagle Scout project to improve fishing piers at DJ Wilcox, Petravice and Indian Hills.
Commissioners agreed to waive the fees for the county facility.
