OKEECHOBEE -- On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office was notified of a shooting that occurred near the Qual Acres Subdivision area of Okeechobee.
Members of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office's road patrol division, criminal investigations division, the Crisis Negotiation Team, and the Special Response Team responded to the area and located one gunshot wound victim. The victim was extracted from the scene and turned over to Okeechobee County Fire Rescue personnel for emergency medical care.
The victim was transported to HCA Raulerson Hospital and was later pronounced deceased.
The shooter was identified as Richard Harvey Daugherty, 64, of Okeechobee, who barricaded himself within his residence. After several hours of negotiations, Daugherty surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.
This case has been deemed a homicide at this time. Daugherty is currently incarcerated at the Okeechobee County Jail and is being held without bond until first appearance.
It appears to be an isolated incident, which poses no danger to the community. The decedent's family was notified of the passing.
