OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School track team held their first home meet in over 20 years on April 9.
For years track athletes at OHS have had to compete at events away from Okeechobee, making it difficult for families and friends to attend the events. But the track was recently updated as part of the new construction going on to replace the high school
Athletes from around the lake were in attendance at the meet, including Clewiston, Moore Haven, Glades Day and LaBelle, as well as teams from the coast like Jensen Beach.
The Brahman runners showed up in a big way at their first home meet in decades, with both the boys and girls teams winning first place. The boys finished in first with a final score of 116 points followed by Moore Haven with 113. The girls finished in first with a score of 111 points followed by LaBelle in second with 75 points.
In the boys’ 4 by 800 relay, Jorge Zuniga, Zachary Stas, Isaac Mosley, Reed Pung finished in first ahead of Clewiston with a time of 9:40.23, almost six seconds ahead of the Tigers.
Carlie Eaton finished in first for Okeechobee in the girls’ 3200 meters race with a time of 14:38.33. Eaton was also first in the girls’ 400 hurdles event with a time of 1:25.69.
With the improvements made in recent months to the track, the OHS track team can now hold running events and hopefully field events in the years to come.
