OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varsity softball team defeated the Joaquin Garcia Lady Bulldogs 9-3 in the district championship on May 1.
The Lady Bulldogs were the number one seed in Okeechobee’s district and coming off a performance in the district semifinal where they shutout Suncoast 15-0.
The Lady Brahmans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, and never let it go. Sophomore Audra Friend led the Lady Brahmans with four hits and 3 RBIs. Two of those hits were doubles and one was a triple. Lilly Larson, Alyssa Madrigal, Melanie Bonilla, and Haylee Pendrey all had two hits for Okeechobee.
Larson got the start on the pitcher’s mound for the Lady Brahmans. She pitched seven innings, allowing only four hits.
Okeechobee was in the district championship after beating the Jensen Beach Lady Falcons 9-1 in the opening round of the playoffs on April 29. Larson also led Okeechobee on the pitcher’s mound in the win against Jensen Beach, pitching for seven innings and allowing only two hits and one run.
Bonilla had a team leading 3 RBIs in the win against Jensen, while Larson and Tehya Nunez each had two RBIs.
Melaine Bonilla and Tehya Nunez lead the Lady Brahmans in hits this season, with 17 each. Nunez and Jenessa Arana both lead the team in RBIs with 10. Arana also had a homerun for Okeechobee this year.
Okeechobee has an 8-14 record this season, scoring big wins over Lake Placid, Suncoast, and Canterbury. They also secured a season sweep over district rival Jensen Beach before knocking them out of the playoffs.
Last season the Lady Brahmans finished with a 7-14 record and were knocked out in the opening round of the playoffs by Sebring. In 2023 Okeechobee finished with a 10-7 record and advanced to the regional quarterfinal.
Next the Lady Brahmans faced the number one seed in the region, the American Heritage Lady Patriots. Okeechobee and American Heritage face off on May 7 at 7 p.m. in Plantation.
