OKEECHOBEE — The helicopter in Veterans' Square Park will soon have new markings. Veteran Gregg Maynard spoke at the Oct. 17 city council meeting about the idea. He said he researched that particular helicopter and found that it is an Air Force helicopter. But, rather than choose to represent one branch and not all, the city has never put any markings on the chopper. Recently, a suggestion was made to put a red cross on the helicopter. This way, everyone who served is represented.
"It's hard to explain how important it was to Vietnam vets," said Maynard. "It was their lifeline."
He said there would be no cost to the city, and he would take care of getting everything donated.
"I think that's a great compromise," said Mayor Dowling Watford.
The AmVets Post 200 and non-profit Thank You for Your Service will host a Salute to Our Veterans in Veterans' Park on Veterans' Day at 10 a.m.
"Come on out on Veterans' Day and listen to their stories," said Maynard.
