FORT PIERCE, Fla. (October 19, 2023) – HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, a 435-bed full-service acute care facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, today announced the addition of robotic-assisted bronchoscopies.
The outpatient procedure allows specially trained physicians to access hard-to-reach areas of the lungs to collect tissue samples. In combination with computerized tomography (CT), the robotic technology uses advanced software to generate 3D maps of all 18 segments of a patient's lung.
“The use of robotic-assisted biopsy technology is an important part of detecting lung cancer early and allowing for better patient outcomes,” said HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Philip Seibel. “Early detection and treatment can significantly increase lung cancer survival rate.”
The state-of-the-art robotic system features an ultra-thin, maneuverable catheter operated by a handheld controller. The easy-to-use system provides the precision needed for lung nodules or other suspicious tissue biopsy.
“We are thrilled to offer this potentially life-saving technology to our patients,” said HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital Chief Executive Officer Eric Goldman. “Our population is growing rapidly, so we are constantly evolving to ensure we provide the highest level of care our community needs, close to home.”
According to the American Cancer Society, “lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, accounting for about one in five of all cancer deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.”
Lawnwood Hospital takes a collaborative approach to provide patients with accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. Patients have access to experienced oncologists and pulmonologists, advanced screening and diagnostic tests, leading treatment options and compassionate experts that support patients and families throughout their health journey.# # #
