MOORE HAVEN — Would a four-day school week work better for the students, teachers and families in rural Glades County?
On April 7, Glades County Schools asked parents to participate in a survey on a proposed four-day school week.
“We are considering a significant change to our school schedule and would like to hear from you. As part of our ongoing efforts to improve both instructional time and work-life balance, we are exploring the possibility of transitioning to a four-day school week,” the letter explained.
“The proposed schedule would involve students attending school four days a week for extended hours, with Fridays off. This shift would not only provide additional instructional time but also offer families a longer weekend for rest, personal activities, and family time. We believe this change could greatly benefit both students and parents, but your input is essential in guiding this decision.
“Glades County School District is proud of the academic achievements our students have made, and we are confident they can continue to meet their academic goals by embracing this innovative model. Being a trendsetter with this school calendar, we look to lead the way in providing the best possible education for our students/your child, while also supporting a balanced lifestyle for all of our families/staff.”
About 60 percent of those responding were in favor of the change, while 20% were undecided. Some thought a four-day week would be easier to get children to doctor’s appointments without missing a school day, since most have to travel an hour or more for appointments. Some parents expressed concerns about childcare for younger children on Fridays.
Parents will have more opportunities to give their input before a decision is made.
