Follow the rules for garbage collection

Posted
OKEECHOBEE -- Okeechobee County residents have new procedures for househld waste collection.

Since March 2024, approximately one year prior to the installation of Waste Management’s new automated collection process, the county and Waste Management were diligent in providing information to county residents on the new garbage collection process by way of residential mailings, social media, the local newspaper, and on the Okeechobee County Government website.

In addition, when each new can was delivered to each residential owner, (months prior to the new collection start date) Waste Management attached a flyer to each can outlining the new collection process, cart information, collection dates, and spacing guidelines.

If your garbage is not being collected, review the below information to ensure you are following the new guidelines as proper placement of your garbage can(s) is essential for an efficient pickup.

Cans should be 3 feet apart

-- All garbage cans need to be spaced at least 3 feet apart and 3 feet away from obstacles like mailboxes and trees. This ensures the automated arm can easily lift and empty the carts and ensures a more efficient pickup.

-- All garbage MUST be containerized in a WM cart. If your items are not in the green cart, it will not be picked up.

--  Lid side facing the roadway: Make sure the lids of your cans are facing the roadway. If lid side is not facing the roadway, the can WILL NOT be emptied.

--  No bags on the ground or on top of cans: DO NOT leave your garbage in boxes, bags or piles on top of, or next to your WM green cart. All trash should be contained within the cans themselves.

Change in Collection Days

The schedule for yard waste collection has changed. Familiarize yourself with the new schedule by reviewing the below map.

OKEECHOBEE -- As of March 3, yard waste collection days (gray cans) will change. Household waste (green cans) collection days will not change. [Mao courtesy Waste Management]

What to Place:

Items like small branches, grass clippings, and palm fronds should go in the gray cart. The lid does not need to be closed. Resident-owned containers WILL NOT be serviced.

Bulk yard waste
Each week WM will collect up to 4 cubic yards of loose yard waste that would not fit into the yard waste cart. Please call to arrange pickup for loose yard waste.

If a pile is larger than 4 cubic yds, WM will remove 4 cubic yds and leave behind the remainder until the next collection date, however, the resident/property owner may make arrangements for immediate removal of the remainder by self-haul, hiring a private contractor, or contacting Waste Management to schedule an additional service for $15 per cubic yard.

Bulk trash
WM will also collect up to 4 cubic yards of bulk trash (e.g., refrigerators, mattresses, etc.) each week. Call for WM pickup.

If you have any questions or need more information about the garbage pickup process, please call Waste Management at 863-763-4818 Option 1.
