Dogs find new homes after death of owner

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — While grieving the death of her mother, Athena Meeker was left with many difficult tasks to do. Yesterday, she took to Facebook to express gratitude to the people who made one aspect of her loss a little easier.

“To whoever adopted the black and white small dog (Shrimp) on May 12 and the blue pit (Blue) on May 29 from Animal Control - thank you! Knowing they have homes lifted so much weight from my shoulders and let me release a breath I hadn’t realized I had been holding.”

Meeker went on to explain her mother died on May 10, and she was desperately trying to find new homes for the dogs even though she was not yet in Okeechobee. Not a Florida resident, Meeker was unable to get to Okeechobee until several days after her mother’s death. Because the dogs would have been left alone in the house, Meeker said she felt they would be safer at the Okeechobee Animal Control facility.

When she got to town, Meeker went to Animal Control to check on them and was relieved to find both dogs had been adopted.

“Knowing they both have homes that picked them specifically from our local pound truly means so much to me. Thank you, for bringing them home and giving them homes, even if they couldn’t be together.”

Both dogs were used to being indoors and Meeker described them as “couch potatoes.” Shrimp and Blue were spoiled beyond measure and very well loved by their human. “I hope the adjustment is an easy one, and I hope they give you just as much love and bring you just as much joy as they did my mother,” said Meeker.

She encourages everyone to adopt rather than to shop when looking for a fur baby.
