OKEECHOBEE — During the May 6 Okeechobee City Council meeting, Robbie Chartier gave a presentation regarding the insurance coverages and services provided by PRM.

Okeechobee Utility Authority Executive Director John Hayford gave an update on the progress towards hooking up residents to the sewer system and answered questions regarding upcoming projects such as the Treasure Island area, where residents were given the opportunity to sign up for sewer in advance and pay a greatly reduced fee.

The city council also heard from WM (formerly Waste Management) that the cost of trash cans was being reduced from $120 per can to $85. In addition, they agreed to discontinue the extra charge to empty those extra cans.

Also, during the meeting, City Administrator Gary Ritter introduced the city’s new IT technician Jose Bravo Gonzalez and said, “When he interviewed, we all looked at each other and said, ‘He’s the guy!’”.

Mayor Dowling Watford proclaimed the month of May 2025 as Building Safety Month.

May 4-May 10 was proclaimed Professional Municipal Clerk Week, and City Clerk Lane Gamiotea, Deputy City Clerk Katie Rogers and Administrative Secretary Cayetana Ortega were recognized for their service to the city.

Leah Suarez of Our Village accepted the proclamation for the month of May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

City council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month in City Hall upstairs in the council chambers at 6 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and citizens are encouraged to come to the meetings and voice their views.
