See how a Michigan town moved 9,100 books one by one to their new home
CHELSEA, Mich. (AP) — Residents of a small Michigan community stood side by side to help a local bookstore move 9,100 books — one by one — from its former site to a new location about a block away. Serendipity Books owner Michelle Tuplin says about 300 people volunteered to pass the books in a human chain through downtown Chelsea on Sunday. The book brigade's helpers lined both sides of the sidewalk, moving the books from the shelves at the old location directly to the correct shelves in the new bookstore building on Main Street. Tuplin said Tuesday that the endeavor took just under two hours and they even put the books back in alphabetical order.
Sarah Palin makes libel claims against The New York Times to a new jury
NEW YORK (AP) — Sarah Palin's defamation claims against The New York Times are being heard by a Manhattan jury after they were revived by an appeals court. Lawyers for Palin and the newspaper told the civil jury in opening statements Tuesday that they will show through testimony and exhibits how a 2017 editorial was written and corrected. Palin has asserted that the newspaper defamed her by falsely linking her campaign rhetoric to a mass shooting. The Times admits it made an error, but it says it was corrected within hours and there was no ill intent. Palin is a former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate.
Belgian teens arrested with 5,000 smuggled ants as Kenya warns of changing trafficking trends
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Two Belgian teenagers have been charged in Kenya with wildlife piracy after they were found with thousands of ants packed in test tubes in what Kenyan authorities said was part of a trend in trafficking smaller and lesser known species. Lornoy David and Seppe Lodewijckx were arrested on April 5 with 5,000 ants at a guest house. They appeared distraught during their appearance before a magistrate, and said they were collecting the ants for fun and did not know that it was illegal. In a separate criminal case, Kenyan Dennis Ng’ang’a and Vietnamese Duh Hung Nguyen also have been charged with illegal trafficking, following their arrests while in possession of 400 ants.
Starbucks imposes new limits on what baristas can wear under their green aprons
Starbucks is imposing new limits on what its baristas can wear under their green aprons. Starting May 12, store employees will be required to wear a solid black shirt and khaki, black or blue denim bottoms. Shirts can be short- or long-sleeved and collared or collarless, the company said in a memo released Monday. Starbucks will give each employee two free T-shirts. Starbucks said the new dress code will make its green aprons stand out and create a sense of familiarity for customers. But the labor group unionizing Starbucks workers opposes the move, saying it won't improve store operations and forces employees to buy new clothes.
How to file for an extension, and other Tax Day advice
NEW YORK (AP) — If you’ve waited till the last minute to file your taxes, don’t panic. You still have time to get it done. And if you’re worried that you still might not be able to finish in time, you can file for an extension, which will give you until Oct. 16 to file your return. However, it’s important to remember the extension is only to file your tax return, not to pay owed taxes. If you owe taxes, you should pay an estimated amount before the deadline to avoid paying penalties and interest. If you expect to receive a refund, you’ll still receive your money when you file your taxes.
Millions tune in for 24-hour live coverage of Sweden’s epic moose migration
Swedish slow TV hit “The Great Moose Migration” has become a phenomenon. The livestream began airing Tuesday, a week ahead of schedule. National broadcaster SVT shows the annual migration 24 hours a day for 20 days. Not much happens for hours at a time, and fans say that's the beauty of it. The production hit 9 million viewers last year. Remote cameras capture dozens of moose as they swim across a river toward summer grazing pastures. An expert and fan calls the show “gripping because nothing catastrophic is happening.” Even the production crew says their stress eases.

5.2-magnitude quake shakes Southern California, tumbling rocks onto roads and items off shelves
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California, swaying lights and rattling cups off shelves. But officials reported no injuries or major damage. Monday morning's earthquake was centered in San Diego County near the mountain town of Julian, which is known for its apple pie shops. And it was felt as far north as Los Angeles County, about 120 miles away. Schoolchildren were escorted outside of buildings as a precaution when the ground started moving. Some San Diego County residents who subscribe to the early warning system called ShakeAlert were notified a second or two before it was felt Monday. Others got the notification after the rocking stopped.
Go inside the factory where Peeps are made
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — Love them or hate them, marshmallow Peeps are inescapable around the Easter holiday. Millions of the brightly-colored candies are made daily in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by Just Born Quality Confections. The family-owned candy manufacturer also churns out Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike fruit chews and Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews. Peeps is the company’s most recognizable brand. It also evokes strong reactions — good and bad. Some say an Easter basket isn’t complete without the multi-flavored Peeps, while others deride them as being indestructible. On average, about 5.5 million are made each day. That adds up to 2 billion Peeps a year.
