Military parade rolls through DC as 'No Kings' protesters across US decry Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — The grand military parade that President Donald Trump wanted for eight years has barreled down Constitution Avenue in Washington with tanks, troops and a 21-gun salute. The celebration played out against the counterpoint of protesters around the country who decried the U.S. leader as a dictator and would-be king. The Republican president, on his 79th birthday, sat under a special viewing stand constructed south of the White House to watch the display of American military might. It was a procession he tried to put in his first term after wanting to top one he saw in France in 2017, but the plans never came together until it was added to an event recognizing the Army’s 250th anniversary.

Authorities still searching for suspect in shooting of 2 Minnesota state lawmakers

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (AP) — A massive search is stretching into its second day for a man who authorities say posed as a police officer and fatally shot a Democratic state lawmaker in her suburban Minneapolis home. Authorities say the suspect also shot and wounded a second lawmaker. Authorities have identified him as 57-year-old Vance Boelter. Melissa Hortman, a former Minnesota House Speaker, and her husband were fatally shot early Saturday in their Brooklyn Park home. The second state lawmaker, Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife were shot multiple times in nearby Champlin. Gov. Tim Walz has called it “a politically motivated assassination.” The FBI has issued a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Boelter's arrest and conviction.

Marines take over some security in LA while cities across US prep for 'No Kings' rallies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a week of protests over federal immigration raids, about 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles to guard a federal building and personnel in the city. Meanwhile, communities across the country are prepping for what’s anticipated to be a nationwide wave of large-scale demonstrations against President Donald Trump’s polices this weekend. The troops with rifles, combat gear and walkie-talkies took over some posts from National Guard members who were deployed to the city after the protests erupted last week. Those protests sparked dozens more over several days around the country, with some leading to clashes with police and hundreds of arrests.

Anti-Trump demonstrators crowd streets, parks and plazas across the US. Organizers say millions came

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Demonstrators came out in cities across the U.S. to protest President Donald Trump. Organizers of Saturday's “No Kings” demonstrations said millions marched in hundreds of events. Huge, boisterous crowds marched in Philadelphia, New York, Denver, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles. Atlanta’s 5,000-capacity rally quickly reached its limit in front of the state Capitol. In Minnesota, organizers canceled demonstrations as police tracked a suspect in the shootings of two legislators and their spouses there. Trump was in Washington for a military parade marking the Army’s 250th anniversary. Governors across the U.S. urged calm and vowed no tolerance for violence, while some mobilized the National Guard.

Israel targets Iran's Defense Ministry headquarters as Tehran unleashes deadly missile strike

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel launched an expanded assault on Iran on Sunday while Tehran unleashed a fresh barrage of missiles. Israel’s military said early Sunday it targeted Iran’s Defense Ministry headquarters in Tehran. Israel’s military also said it targeted sites it alleged were associated with Iran’s nuclear program around Tehran. It alleged the sites were “related to the Iranian regime’s nuclear weapons project.” U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly said Iran was not pursuing a nuclear weapon before Israel unleashed its campaign of airstrikes targeting Iran beginning Friday.

Live updates: Military parade rolls through DC as ‘No Kings’ protests decry Trump across the US

A massive military parade has been held to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, requested by President Donald Trump to coincide with his birthday. Tanks and troops rolled through Washington D.C. on Saturday, where the rain held to a slight drizzle but low clouds seem to contribute to fewer aircraft. Nationwide, opponents of the president’s agenda rallied in hundreds of cities for “No Kings” protests. And just as the parade was underway, police in Los Angeles were firing clouds of tear gas and flash bangs to try to disperse protesters challenging immigration raids.

Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear program are sweeping but can they decimate it?

Israel’s sweeping attack across Iran struck at the heart of Tehran’s nuclear program, delivering a blow to the country’s ability to enrich uranium and potentially setting its nuclear ambitions back by months or years. As well as killing key military figures and nuclear scientists, the Israeli strikes destroyed part of a plant that was enriching uranium to levels far beyond the requirements for nuclear-fueled power stations. The attacks also destroyed backup power for the underground section of the plant, potentially damaging more sensitive equipment. Iran’s nuclear program has progressed rapidly since 2018, when the U.S. withdrew from a deal to limit Tehran’s capacity to enrich uranium.

Zelenskyy warns oil price surge could help Russia's war effort

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says rising global oil prices following Israeli strikes on Iran will strengthen Russia by increasing its oil revenues, aiding its war effort in Ukraine. He criticized the lack of effective Western price caps on Russian oil and says he plans to raise the issue in an upcoming conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy also expressed concern that renewed tensions in the Middle East could divert U.S. aid away from Ukraine, as has happened in the past. His remarks were made Friday and released under embargo on Saturday afternoon.

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — Indian investigators have recovered the digital flight data recorder or the black box of the Air India flight that crashed a day earlier. The crash on Thursday killed 241 people on board and at least five people on the ground. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said that the black box recovery Friday marks an important step forward in the investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met with the lone surviving passenger of the London-bound Boeing 787 that struck a medical college hostel when it crashed into a residential area of the northwestern city of Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff. DNA testing was being conducted to identify the victims. More bodies are expected to be found in the search at the crash site.

In White Sox stadium broadcast, Pope Leo XIV sends message of hope to Chicago and the US

In his first words directed specifically to Americans, Pope Leo XIV told young people on Saturday how to find hope and meaning in their lives through God and in service to others. The message was delivered in a video broadcast on the jumbotron at the White Sox baseball stadium in Chicago, That is Leo’s hometown, and he roots for the White Sox. The event was organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago in honor of his recent election as pope. Leo seized the opportunity to speak directly to young people, tying his message to the Catholic Church’s ongoing Jubilee year of hope that was declared by Pope Francis.
