LABELLE — Three LaBelle High School (LHS) athletes decided to continue playing sports while pursuing their education after high school. Senior Alexis Camacho-Ramirez, a three-sport athlete and honor student, signed her letter of intent to run cross country and track for South Florida State College. While at LHS, Alexis earned a spot on the Cross Country, Girl’s Soccer, and Track teams. The 2021-2022 LHS Athlete of the Year was able to help lead her cross-country team to win District Runner-Up in 2021 and was a part of the state qualifier team as well. Over the past two years, she has made the News-Press All-Area team as an Honorable Mention and competed in the regional competition for soccer in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons. She is a leader both on and off the field, is involved in the National Honor Society, and has maintained a 4.19 GPA. As a future panther at SFSC, Alexis will pursue a degree in radiologic technology. She would also like to start her own business selling handmade goods on top of her career as a radiologic technologist. Alexis chose South Florida State because it gave her the opportunity to continue to do what she loves the most, which is running. South Florida State College also happened to offer the major she needed for her dream career while allowing her to stay close to home. We can’t wait to see how well she succeeds in reaching her athletic and academic goals. Congratulations, Alexis!

Senior Haleigh Campbell, a member of the varsity basketball and softball teams at LHS, signed her letter of intent to play for Ave Maria University (AMU) in Ave Maria, Florida and will play softball for the Gyrenes. While studying at AMU, Haleigh plans to major in nursing because one of her favorite things to do is to help people of all ages. She would like to either be a travel nurse or focus on pediatric nursing. Haleigh chose Ave Maria University because it isn’t too far from her home, and she has family who lives close to the school. She also loved how welcoming the coaches were towards her, and how beautiful the campus was. While participating in LHS Athletics, Haleigh earned the MVP Award for her softball team and was ranked second in the state as a top first baseman during the 2022 season. Haleigh also currently holds the LHS record for Most Assists in a game for girl’s basketball, with 14. She was ranked 22 in the state for assists this past season. We look forward to seeing her succeed at AMU, congratulations!

After receiving six offers for football and two offers for weightlifting, Maurice “Reece” McClain, Jr., signed his letter of intent to be an olympic weightlifter for Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. Reece will have the unique opportunity to lift alongside his sister Jenna McClain, who is also a weightlifter for Lindenwood and a National Championship winner. He also chose Lindenwood because they offered him the best financial opportunity while also allowing him to play the sport he loves at a D1 level. He currently holds the LHS Clean and Jerk record for his weight class with a total of 310 lbs, holds the District Champion Titles for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons for his weight class and won the Regional Title last year. Reece is a four-sport athlete, Dual Enrollment student, has a GPA of 4.44, is in the top 20 of his graduating class, and was the Athlete of the Year for LHS last year. Reece hopes to major in business management while minoring in health/sport science. He plans to secure a job in an agricultural company similar to US Sugar and work on the business side of agriculture. We are excited to see Reece continue to excel in the coming years!
