Ahead of National Police Week (May 11-17), K9s United, a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting law enforcement K9s nationwide, just made history with the launch of America’s first-ever law enforcement K9 specialty license plate – now available to Florida drivers. This groundbreaking initiative not only honors and advocates for these four-legged heroes but also funds critical training and equipment for America’s K9 units.
The milestone was driven by the tragic loss of K9 Fang, whose ultimate sacrifice ignited a movement for stronger legal protections for working police dogs. It also marks K9s United’s 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of advocacy and impact by Debbie Johnson, president and founder of K9s United, who turned grief into action and led efforts for two landmark laws signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis:
• Senate Bill 96 – Increases penalties for harming or killing a law enforcement K9, including search and rescue and mounted units.
• Senate Bill 388 – Ensures emergency medical care from first responders and transport via ambulance or helicopter for injured K9s.
While Johnson is leading the way in Florida, she isn’t stopping there. She’s now working with federal legislators to strengthen penalties for harming America’s working K9s serving on our front lines.
K9s United’s Impact: As a 100% volunteer organization with a mission to protect and serve our four-legged frontline heroes, K9s United has supported over 450 law enforcement agencies across 45 states through:
• 1,250+ equipment donations totaling more than $1.7 million – Bulletproof and stab-proof K9 vests, K9 containment systems and heat alarms to keep them safe; vital training and equipment to keep them sharp; working dogs to build out K9 teams and keep K9 officers safe; police vehicles and more.
• 1,200+ K9 officers & EMS professionals trained – Providing the highest level of customized training, problem-solving techniques and animal care practices essential for protecting and serving communities on the front line – at no cost to attendees or their agencies.
• 200+ memorial portraits – Presented to handlers who have lost their K9 partner in the line of duty.
