ALVA — Spring is in the air and that means the annual Plant and Strawberry Shortcake Sale is just around the corner.
Gardeners and strawberry connoisseurs make their way to Alva by car, boat or bicycle to purchase healthy living plants and to enjoy a bowl of fresh strawberry shortcake while socializing with residents of the historic river town along the Caloosahatchee River.
Sponsored by the Alva Garden Club, the event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11 at the Alva Methodist Church grounds and fellowship hall, 21440 Pearl Street. The Alva boat ramp is nearby so leisure boaters are welcome to attend as well.
A variety of Florida-grown plants from garden club members will be sold, in addition to beautiful specimens donated by local nurseries, all sold at very reasonable prices. Plant varieties vary and are sold on a first-come first-served basis. Examples include azalea, bromeliad, hibiscus, succulents, and herbs.
Homemade strawberry shortcake baked by garden club members will feature indoor seating, along with a large variety of baked goods to take home. In addition, visitors can browse used books and a variety of craft vendors. Outdoor musicians and indoor stage performers will entertain people of all ages.
Proceeds from this event allow the club to continue providing civic contributions in the community. On-site parking also will be available. Visit alvagardenclub.org for more information.
