TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Secretary of State has announced the launch of the updated RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov, the state’s voter registration website that offers Florida’s eligible voters a secure and convenient way to register to vote or update an existing voter registration. The improvements are the result of input from the public and Florida’s 67 supervisors of elections.
“Preparations for the 2024 presidential election cycle are already underway in elections offices across Florida. With the Presidential Preference Primary in March of next year, I am encouraging Floridians to use the updated RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov to ensure they are registered to vote or that their information up to date.” Florida Secretary of State and Chief Election Officer Cord Byrd said. “Since its implementation in 2017, RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov has proven to be a popular tool for Floridians who are registering to vote or making updates to their voter status. Enhancing our online voter registration system is a meaningful step in our commitment to improve the elections process while safeguarding the personal information of voters. I want to thank the public and all the Supervisors of Election who offered their recommendations to make RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov better.”
RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov has been improved to make it easier for users to fill out data fields and provides clear examples to guide them where to find requested personal information. Updates to the website include:
• Address autocomplete when providing a residential address that simplifies the address auto validation and helps users select addresses identified by USPS,
• Helpful illustrations that make it easier to find requested personal information on a Florida issued driver license and ID card, and
• Information that is displayed in a more user-friendly manner.
These improvements were made as the result of recommendations and input provided by concerned Florida citizens, interest and voting rights advocacy groups and Florida’s Supervisors of Elections.
RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov still maintains multiple safeguards in place to verify and protect a person’s identity and personal information, including a state-of-the-art firewall, data encryption, captcha boxes, session time-out after inactivity and the use of multi-screens.
The website requires information that only the person seeking to register or change an existing registration should know, such as the issued date of their Florida driver license or state ID card, their Florida driver license or state ID card number and the last four digits of their social security number.
All of this information is verified in real-time in order for a person to complete the application process online. If the information cannot be verified, a person is not able to move forward with submitting the application electronically. Additionally, there is no retention of data within the RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov website because it is securely transmitted to an internal system. It is important to note that Florida public records laws still apply to voter registration information that is submitted electronically. However, a person may still use the site to populate an application to print, sign, and deliver to his or her Supervisor of Elections’ office.
RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is offered in English and Spanish, is accessible for persons with disabilities and is mobile-friendly.
