GLADES COUNTY – Heavy rainfall contributed to a crash that claimed two young lives on SR 78 in Glades County on May 10, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the FHP report, the accident occurred on Saturday, May 10 at 5:33 p.m.
A sedan, driven by a 31-year-old Clewiston man was traveling north on SR 78, south of Old Lakeport Road.
A sports utility vehicle (SUV), driven by a 24-year-old Clewiston woman, was traveling south on SR 78, south of Old Lakeport Road.
While traveling north over the bridge over Fisheating Creek, the sedan hydroplaned, rotating and entering the southbound lane.
The driver of the SUV steered left in an evasive maneuver, the report continues. The front of the SUV collided with the right rear side of the sedan.
Post collision, the sedan collided with the concrete bridge rail and came to a final rest on the west paved shoulder of the bridge.
The SUV rotated and came to a final rest on the bridge.
Two boys, ages 5 and 7, who were passengers in the sedan were pronounced dead at the scene.
Another passenger, a 34-year-old Clewiston woman, was injured. The sedan driver was critically injured. They were transported to an area hospital.
The SUV driver was also injured and was transported to an area hospital, according to the FHP report.
