MOORE HAVEN- Both the Moore Haven Terriers and Clewiston Tigers played their spring football near the end of May. The Terriers hosted the East Lee County Jaguars while the Tigers hosted the Immokalee Indians.

Clewiston held a 14-13 lead over Immokalee heading into the fourth quarter, but a late field goal by the Indians secured the win for the visiting team 16-14. The Tigers had a chance to retake the lead shortly before the game ended, but missed the field goal.

The Terriers spring football game against East Lee was the debut of their new quarterback Austin Simmons. Simmons transferred to Moore Haven from Pahokee.

During both of his seasons in Pahokee the Blue Devils made deep playoff runs. The Blue Devils reached the regional final both years, coming one game away from advancing to the state semifinal. The college football website Rivals.com currently ranks Simmons as the number three prostyle quarterback in country in the 2025 class.

Before the spring game Simmons threw for over 400 yards in Moore Haven’s intrasquad scrimmage game.

The spring game was scoreless for the first three quarter. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when East Lee struck the first blow against Moore Haven, going up 7-0 on a 1-yard touchdown run. But the Terriers responded with a touchdown of their own a few plays later, with Simmons securing the 2-point conversion to put Moore Haven up 8-7.

But East Lee pass rush started getting home late in the fourth quarter, frustrating the Moore Haven offense. East Lee’s rushing game eventually wore down the Terrier defense and the Jaguars went on to win 28-8.

Now, all eyes are on Simmons as he decides on whether or not to reclassify to 2023. Simmons is currently committed to the University of Florida and has two more years of high school football ahead of him. But he already has nearly 50 college credits and could reclassify to 2023, graduate early and join the Gators this fall.

As of now Simmons is scheduled to be with Moore Haven next season. He’ll be talking to family members and making a decision on reclassifying soon.
