TAMPA  — Florida gas prices fell below $3 per gallon last week. The state average dropped to $2.93 per gallon on Sunday. That's the lowest daily average price since December 2023.

Sunday's state average is 17 cents less than a week ago, 22 cents less than a month ago, and 54 cents less than this time last year.  

"Florida drivers are seeing the lowest gas prices in 17 months," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Prices dipped due to fears that the trade war could trigger a recession and reduce fuel demand. However, reports of easing tensions pushed oil prices higher last week, which could result in rising prices at the pump."

The U.S. price for crude oil started last week at 57.13 per barrel and rose 5% to $61 by Friday, aligning with April's price levels. Gasoline futures also gained 9 cents.

1. Combine errands to limit driving time.
2. Drive conservatively. Avoid aggressive acceleration and speeding, which reduces fuel economy.
3. Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.

5. Pay with cash. Some retailers charge more per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
