Cancer advocates urge lawmakers to prioritize funding for lifesaving early-detection programs

TALLAHASSEE — Survivors, caregivers and advocates from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will gather at the Capitol on Tuesday for ‘Cancer Action Day’ to urge state lawmakers to act on critical cancer-related priorities for Floridians.

Advocates are calling for $3 million in recurring state funding for the Mary Brogan Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program to provide critical screenings and treatment for low-income and underinsured women, continued investment in cancer research and innovation to advance treatment and legislative support for Medicaid expansion to improve access to care for more Floridians.

Spokespeople:

The spokespeople will highlight the urgent need and opportunities to lower the cancer burden for all Floridians.

• Susan Harbin: Senior Government Relations Director for ACS CAN

• Donna Lundy, PhD: Breast cancer survivor and 25+ year ACS CAN volunteer

• Gloria Garcia, first Hispanic Lead Ambassador for ACS CAN and breast cancer advocate

• Hannah Groth: Childhood cancer survivor, Medicaid beneficiary and advocate
