Alligator Alcatraz to be ready to open on Tuesday

More than 3,000 detainees could be housed in trailers and tents

BIG CYPRESS PRESERVE -- Alligator Alcatraz, a processing and detainment center for undocumented migrants in the Big Cypress National Preserve, will be ready to accept federal detainees on Tuesday, according to an interview Gov. Ron DeSantis gave Fox News.

“More than 3,000 illegals can be processed through here,” DeSantis explained as he escorted Steve Doocy through the rows of tents, trailers and temporary construction on the pavement at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport off the Tamiami Trail in the Big Cypress Preserve.

DeSantis said it will be a “one stop shop” to process migrants and put them on planes to other countries.

While Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has publicly referred to the airstrip as “abandoned,” the governor said it is a working airport.

“This is an airport that we use for training,” DeSantis said. “This is a functioning airport. All those training flights will still be able to continue.

“All the stuff that goes into intake and processing of illegals, this was all put up,” the governor said, pointing out rows of trailers and tents.

“By Tuesday this will be able to have intact of illegals,” DeSantis said. “Illegals will come in, they will be processed, there will be places for them to be housed. You’ll have an ability for food. You’ll have an ability for them to consult legal (services).

“This is going to be a self-contained area. We’ll also have stuff for the staff who work here. We’ve got laundry facilities. We’ve got showers,” he continued.

He said the equipment came from the Division of Emergency Management.

“When we have a hurricane, we would actually have people staged here for hurricane response normally,” said DeSantis. “When we have all the lineman come in to do power, we have to set up little areas for them.

“There’s not going to be anything that they are hurting for. There will be AC. There’s medical here,” DeSantis said. “There will be AC. There will be things that everybody needs.”

DeSantis said the facility will be “as secure as it gets.

“If a criminal alien were to escape from here somehow, you’ve got nowhere to go,” he said. “What are you going to do, trudge through the swamp and dodge alligators?”

He said because it is a remote site, “this has no impact on Florida residents.”

The Miccosukee Tribe and others who live in the Big Cypress Preserve disagree with that assessment.

Floridians who oppose the placement of the detainment facility plan to gather near the site along the Tamiami Trail on Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
