CLEWISTON- Former Clewiston High School Tiger Ja’Markis Weston is signing with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent.
Weston played football at Clewiston under head coach Brad Garret. In his final game as a Tiger, Weston helped led Clewiston to a 42-2 win over their Lake Okeechobee rival Brahmans. Coach Garret recently passed away last year after a long battle with cancer.
After graduating Weston chose to continue his education and athletic career at the University of Florida. He chose to play for the Gators over Penn State, Tennessee and the University of Central Florida.
In his announcement declaring for the draft, Weston said that his time at UF had been an incredible adventure filled with growth and invaluable experiences.
Weston was a top special teams player for the Gators. He spent six years at UF, playing wide receiver, safety, linebacker and EDGE. He played in all 13 games primarily on special teams while appearing on defense in three contests. Academically, Weston was on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and earned his bachelor's degree in Education Sciences.
He’ll be joining a Jets team that is attempting to rebuild after going all in on quarterback Aaron Rodgers over the last two seasons. The Jets released Aaron Rodgers after a 5-win season and brought in former Chicago Bear Justin Fields as quarterback. New York also spent a fifth-round draft pick on Florida State University quarterback Jordan Travis. But a week after the draft, Travis announced that he was medically advised to retire from football.
The New York Jets are scheduled to play in both Tampa Bay and Miami next season.
