Will ICE agents show up at Florida schools?

WEST PALM BEACH – What happens if Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents show up at a school?

Shortly after taking office in January, President Donald Trump rescinded a 2011 directive that prevented ICE from conducting interviews, searches and arrests at sensitive locations such as schools, churches and hospitals.

While it hasn’t happened yet in Florida, ICE agents have tried to enter schools in California. They were denied entry after school officials checked with legal counsel.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, fear of ICE raids at schools has caused some parents to keep their children home.

Under current law, Florida School Districts do not require parents to reveal immigration status when they enroll their children in school.

“The Palm Beach County School District prioritizes a safe and supportive learning environment on our campuses. We remain dedicated to our mission of educating, empowering, and inspiring students to reach their full potential,” explained Steven King with the Palm Beach County School District.

“The district adheres to strict protocols for all campus visitors and complies with all relevant state and federal laws and regulations. We will continue closely monitoring any federal or state policy changes that impact our schools,” he continued.  “As a matter of practice, students may only be released to their parents/guardians or an authorized adult with legal documentation (e.g., custody order, warrant, or court order). Student records are confidential under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).”
