McCarthy’s is just a hop, skip and a jump from lake Okeechobee and is located in West Palm Beach. It is considered a wildlife sanctuary and is home to many varieties of animal including lions, tigers, owls, snakes and birds.
Rehabilitation is one of the biggest concerns at the sanctuary, and recently, they built a raptor flight. The flight is 50′ long by 12′ high and 10′ wide for unlimited activity. Attached to that flight are 4 smaller limited activity flights measuring 6′ wide by 8′ long and 8′ high.
They also have a clinic and a recovery room for injured or orphaned animals. The goal is to nurse the animals back to health and release them back into the wild when at all possible.
The sanctuary is not open to the public except through prearranged tours. You can call Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The cost is $50 per adult, and $40 per child.
During the tours, several of the smaller animals are brought out for the participants to interact with.
Participants are welcome to bring in their own food, but water bottles, chips and sodas are available for purchase.
Though the office is open all week, tours are only scheduled for Thursday, Fridays or Saturdays.
Groups of up to 20 people can tour together, but no discounts are offered, because the proceeds from the tours help support the sanctuary.
McCarthy’s is located at 12943 61st Street North in West Palm. They can be reached by phone at 561-790-2116 or on the web at https://www.mccarthyswildlife.com/.
