Local conference focused on mental health of families adds immigration workshop

Posted

The Turn on the Light National Conference on the Wellbeing of Children and Families is a one-day event during National Child Abuse Prevention Month that brings together parents, volunteers, and professionals concerned with the welfare of children and families for a full day of educational workshops and presentations focusing on child and family health and well-being, including strategies, research, practices, therapeutic approaches, and advocacy.

This year, one of those workshops titled, “Immigration Policy Changes for Victims and Survivors” will focus on what President Trump’s new immigration policies mean for children and adults who are foreign national victims or survivors of abuse or crimes. The session will explain immigration options for victims and survivors, recent policy changes, and how service providers can help foreign nationals who are victims of crime and abuse.

Event Details:

20th Annual Turn On The Light Conference

When: April 17, 2024 – 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Where: Palm Beach County Convention Center, 650 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Registration: www.turnonthelight.org

Parents and mental health professionals will also be able to acquire information and resources about community programs, services, and products relevant to children and families from local and national exhibitors and vendors. Professionals who work with children and families including social workers, psychologists, law enforcement, attorneys, nurses, and teachers will also provide networking opportunities.

Advocate and author, Karen “Wren” Hansen will be the keynote speaker this year. Hansen has been a successful entrepreneur since 2001 and holds seven U.S. Patents in product design. Based on the intimate details of her life experiences, in 2016, she began her journey as an advocate for victims and survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence.

“My story is a complex one, to say the least…I have survived childhood sexual abuse by family members, college campus rape and a resulting pregnancy, domestic violence with restraining orders, robberies, and embezzlement by family, and what I can tell you for sure, is that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, whether you like it or not,” says Hansen.
